In 1902 Willis Haviland Carrier, an American engineer, invented the Air Conditioner. But his intention wasn’t to stop indoor sweating or quiet a complaining hot wife. Carrier was solving a humidity problem at the Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing & Publishing Company in Buffalo, New York. Paper was expanding and shrinking due to moisture, ruining print quality.
So What did Carrier create?
He designed the first modern electrical air-conditioning system. This was revolutionary at the time. And it’s often said that the invention of Air Conditioning allowed for the mass migration to Florida. It was bad enough that northerners had to brave alligators and mosquito’s, but the unbearable humid heat was just not livable. With the commercialization of air conditioners people could tolerate the heat, though they still had to deal with alligator and mosquito bites.

Carrier didn’t invent air conditioning for comfort. He invented air control to solve a humidity and quality problem.
